A .tn is not obtained like a .com: the holder must be an entity registered in Tunisia, a Tunisian resident or national, and one of the domain's DNS servers must sit in Tunisia. The first condition is down to you, the second to your host, and few hosts meet it. We run servers in Sousse, so the Tunisian DNS comes with the hosting, and we handle the registration. The .tn and the .com.tn are €19.90 a year.
In Tunisia, Law 2004-63 makes any transfer of personal data abroad subject to prior authorisation from the INPDP. The filing describes the data leaving, its nature and the destination country: its scope follows what actually leaves the territory. If your main data sits in Europe or the United States, it covers the database, the access, the logs. With our servers in Sousse, it covers only the daily backup, towards a destination you choose in Africa or in Europe.
Tunisia has been a party to Council of Europe Convention 108 since 1 November 2017, and signed its amending protocol in May 2019, in 30th position. It is the text that also underpins data protection in the European Union, whose member states are all parties, as is Senegal, which acceded in 50th position. A backup sent to a signatory country therefore changes territory, not rules.
