What it takes to get a .ma domain

A .ma is not obtained like a .com: ANRT, which runs the extension through the registre.ma registry, requires a contact established in Morocco with a Moroccan postal address, a representative there if the holder lives abroad, and a copy of the document itself, national ID card or passport for an individual, trade register or ICE for a company. The file goes through an accredited registrar and is checked within a few days. Hodi puts it together with you and follows the request through. The .ma and the .co.ma are €19.90 a year.

The CNDP, and why the question does not arise in Morocco

Law 09-08 and its implementing decree 2-09-165 make any transfer of personal data abroad subject to an authorisation from the CNDP. The filing describes the data leaving, its nature and the destination country, and it is usually the backup that triggers it: a DPO always ends up asking where it goes. In Morocco, it goes to our second site. We run servers on two sites, in Fez and in Rabat, production on one and the backup on the other: nothing leaves the territory, so there is no filing to make.

Morocco and Europe under the same set of rules

Morocco deposited its instruments of ratification of Council of Europe Convention 108 on 28 May 2019, in 55th position and as the 6th country in the African region. The Convention and its additional protocol 181, the one covering supervisory authorities and transborder data flows, have applied there since 1 September 2019. It is the text that also underpins data protection in the European Union, whose member states are all parties. Your data stays in Morocco, and the rulebook that applies to it is the one your European partners already know.
